Indian OPVC pipe flexibility standard

Related standards of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS): IS 4985

This standard applies to PVC pressure pipes (non plasticized), but flexibility requirements may indirectly involve OPVC pipes, which are typically evaluated by bending performance or impact strength.

Key parameters of flexibility

Bending radius:

Indian standards may require OPVC pipes to bend to 6-8 times the diameter of the pipe without breaking at a specific temperature (such as 23 ° C).

Tensile performance:

IS 5831 (PVC piping system) may require a fracture elongation of ≥ 200% (specific value to be checked according to standards).

Low temperature brittleness, some standards require impact testing at 0 ° C or lower temperature (such as IS 13285)

Test method reference:

IS 2508, Test method for impact resistance of plastic pipe fittings.

IS 12235, Tensile performance testing of plastic pipes.

ASTM D638/D790 (international reference) may be adopted by Indian manufacturers for tensile and flexural modulus testing.

Industry  application

Indian manufacturers often combine BIS standards with international standards (such as ISO4422, ASTM) to produce OPVC pipes, and the flexibility may be marked as:

Flexural modulus, 2500-3000MPa (moderate flexibility).

Elastic recovery rate, able to recover to its original state after bending (without permanent deformation)

Application of PVC-O pipes

Because PVC-O pipes have many advantages, such as high cost performance, corrosion resistance, long service life, convenient installation and maintenance, low friction coefficient, light weight, high strength, fatigue resistance, impact resistance, earthquake resistance, settlement resistance, leakage prevention, aging resistance, both rigid and flexible, ecological and environmental protection, health, etc., they have been widely used in many places. Especially in situations where high-strength and high toughness materials are required, such as water supply and drainage systems, industrial pipelines, etc., PVC-O pipes perform well.

In foreign countries, PVC-O is mainly used in water supply pipelines, mining pipelines, non excavation laying and repair pipelines, gas pipeline networks, and other fields. The application of PVC-O in drinking water pipelines in some countries is gradually expanding, becoming a substitute for PVC-U. According to a survey report by Wavin Group, countries such as the Netherlands, France, Spain, North America, South America, and Australia are all using PVC-O pipelines in large quantities. The drinking water network in the Netherlands already uses 100% PVC-O pipes, and countries such as France will also fully adopt them in the next one or two years. The mining environment is particularly harsh, with strict safety requirements. In corrosive underground environments, PVC-O pipes with high strength, toughness, impact resistance, and non corrosion have a competitive advantage. The use of non excavation technology to lay new pipelines and repair old pipelines is a market with huge demand, and the Duraliner TM repair method can significantly save costs. PVC-O pipes are used in gas pipeline networks in countries such as the Netherlands, providing excellent strength, stiffness, and toughness, with much lower material and laying costs compared to competing materials.
