PEX-b pipe is a type of cross-linked polyethylene pipe, also known as silane cross-linked polyethylene pipe.

The following are the three most common forms of cross-linked polyethylene:

Peroxide cross-linked polyethylene PEX-a

Silane crosslinked polyethylene PEX-b

Irradiation cross-linked polyethylene PEX-c

The silane crosslinking method (PE-Xb) involves the fusion grafting reaction between polyethylene and silane in a screw extruder to produce crosslinkable silane grafted polyethylene composites. Under the action of a catalyst, the crosslinkable silane grafted polyethylene composite is hydrolyzed and undergoes condensation (crosslinking) reaction, forming a cross-linked structure of Si-O-Si three-dimensional network cross-linked polyethylene.

The radiation crosslinking method (PE-Xc) is achieved by β Ray or γ Irradiation of formed products by radiation causes the formation of C-C cross-linking bonds between polyethylene molecules. The obtained product is pure and has excellent electrical performance, but the radiation generation device is expensive, and the radiation line penetration ability is limited. It is not suitable for making thick wall products or products with complex structures, and is mostly used for the production of cable materials, heat shrink tubes, and special films.

Compared with PE-Xa and PE-Xc, the silane crosslinking method (PE-Xb) is relatively simple, and can undergo melt grafting reaction in a general extruder. The equipment investment is small, and the original ordinary polyethylene extrusion equipment can be fully utilized. The process operation is simple and easy to control, and the production speed is fast. The resulting product has uniform crosslinking degree and stable performance. In addition, crosslinkable silane grafted polyethylene composites can also be applied in fields such as injection molding. The implementation of silane grafted polyethylene hydrolysis condensation crosslinking process is very simple, and even the crosslinking reaction can be completed by placing it in humid air. To accelerate the crosslinking reaction, the formed product can be soaked in hot water or steam.

The production of PEX-b pipes usually uses A and B component materials, usually proportioned with 95% grafting material and 5% catalyst masterbatch. This ratio ensures that PEX materials have the best processability and pipeline application performance.
